Celebrating August, National Coloring Book Day and WOYWW #374!

Happy Wednesday everyone - I cannot believe that we are already into August! Is your year flying by as fast as mine? Today for What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday I am sharing my desk covered in the aftermath of yesterday's National Coloring Book Day, where I spent the afternoon playing in my coloring books with a few friends.
I have been collecting and using my coloring books long before they became the popular item they are today, so my collection is pretty extensive, and so are my collections of the mediums I use to fill them.
My first choices are always my Copic markers and my Prismacolor pencils, but lately I have been using my watercolor pencils and a waterbrush, my Inktense blocks, My Inkagolds as paint and my oil and chalk pastels with a foam sponge.

I find it kind of funny that the "experts" are now doing studies that indicate coloring can calm your heartrate, lower your blood pressure and seems to put the adult mind in the same place that meditation does, because I have known that for years - fourteen years ago coloring is what I used to help me quit smoking.  So if you need some down time, coloring is really good way to go.
And now I want to share an exciting week-long coloring event being put on over at the STAMPlorations blog. Download their coloring page from the brand new Color Blooms coloring book for adults; designed especially for cardmakers, crafters and mixed media artist; and then link up your finished page to be entered into a draw to win the new book.  If you love coloring and love flowers this is the book for you! Here are a couple of pages that I completed using some of my other coloring mediums:

I used my inkagolds and a brush to paint this page
I love the shimmer inkagold leaves behind.
And I used my oil pastels and a makeup sponge on these daffodils and then a black marker to re-outline the flowers.

I am also sharing a few photos of the fruits of our labours this past week as many of the fruits and veggies we have been growing are ready to be processed.

we have picked a crazy amount of green and yellow beans, these are just this morning's harvest Now all blanched and bagged and in the freezer.
Hubby and his first pick of cukes... which he learned how to turn into garlic dill pickles...
16 Jars of them!
We grew some super fat cukes which when sliced are the perfect size for the top of a hamburger.
We also grew the dill and the garlic that we used in these jars.
And finally just a few of the zucchini and apples became these wonderful muffins and Nut bread.
And I just have to share this magnificent rose that bloomed in my flower garden this week...a true coral colored beauty!

So that's it, my desk today and a bit of my past week, thank you for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed your peek into my life today.

  5. Oh gosh the two things I don't do, colouring and cooking! Your colouring is amazing, if it really lowers blood pressure that is probably why I don't like it as I have really low blood pressure to start with! As for cooking I can't get my head around courgettes in muffins, despite them looking delicious! Great to see all your pens stored in rainbow colours now that rocks my boat. BJ#9

  8. Beautiful colouring, Lynne. I had never thought of using the inka gold as a paint... must try that some time, because, yes, it does give an amazing shimmer. Had a real nosey around your site, and confess to typing your town into google - wow. I cannot imagine living so far into the countryside. The only time we have ever been your way was for our silver wedding anniversary, and we took the Rocky Mountaineer - stunning!!!
Take care and keep colouring. Well done to hubby. The vegetable crop will certainly see you through the wild winter.
    God bless.

  12. Happy WOYWW. So many wonderful things to look at. My highlights are your wonderful colouring pages, collection of Copics, that nut bread/muffins and the gorgeous rose. Hungry now - and a reminder I have some soft bananas that need to be used to make something, so will get down to the kitchen shortly and get the oven on. Ali x #22

  13. Beautiful colouring, Lynne! I must say I never really got into colouring, but now I'm thinking this could be the perfect art activity for travelling. Love how Mr Awesome always poses with his produce with so much pride - then it's over to you to slave away in the kitchen, I guess! What on earth are you going to do with that many preserves and pickles? Yummy bakes and gorgeous flowers as well! Enjoy your week! zsuzsa #21

  16. wow! a man after my own heart - Garlic anything works for me. We made ourselves very similar desks - I have butcher block counter top on top of black bookshelves - I love mine! Your coloring is awesome, Maybe since I have been water coloring more often that is why my cholesterol has gone down - for sure it's not because of the ice cream I love! Have a wonderful Wednesday, donna #41

  20. I can tell you've been colouring for a long time, your technique is ever so good! How do you progress? Do you pick one colour and do areas with that or do you start in one corner or the middle and see how it goes? I'm interested! I have some colouring books but am very bad at letting myself have the time to sit down and do them.
Your garden produce is amazing, our beans and cakes have been fantastic too :-)

    1. Dear Jan...thank you for the lovely comment! Now to answer your question, on the page I showcased in this post I picked a spot that looked good to me and established the color theme for the buildings and bumps in that spot and then I slowly colored outward (like ripples on the water) keeping the colors similar to help tie everything together, otherwise, becasue the pattern is so detailed, your eyes would get confused. But when I color I try to just let myself work inuitively - without overthinking... THAT is the stress relief... I usually have a movie or music playing in the backgroun (something without commercials) and just let myself get lost in the color and the sound... I HIGHLY recommend letting yourself have some coloring time, because once you experience this "place" you will always find time to allow yourself to Just Color! PS: I have found that My Coloring works best when I am coloring a page that I Really like and am using "stuff" (pencils, pens, paints, markers) that feels good in my hands - this is not the time to skimp on dollar store markers! 21. HI Lynne, so much interesting stuff in your post! I love that feeling when you've pickled and preserved a homegrown harvest - we like to find a lot of free food in the hedgerows too, so satisfying! I missed National Colouring Day - but then every day can be my personal Colouring Day can't it? :o) Annie C #47

    1. Dear Annie... thanks for popping by and leaving such a nice comment. My hubby and I just discovered some blackberry bushed growing wild at the edge of our property (MORE Jam! grin) and that the loveliest of trees in my backyard has been identified as a mulberry tree - with blue-y purple berries... which I am praying are NOT edible - otherwise MORE jam!
